Every year different environmental events are expected, one of the most important is the "Earth Hour" which is celebrated on the last Saturday of March.

2022 is destined to be a critical year for the future of our planet. Although the evidence of the environmental crisis and the desire for change is growing stronger by the day, this has yet to be translated into the necessary action.

Origins of Earth Hour

Earth Hour was promoted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Leo Burnett advertising agency. The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney (Australia) on March 31, 2007 between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. San Francisco also joined the so-called Lights Out action.

What started in Sydney has grown into a global movement that has reached thousands of cities in 188 countries and territories.

What is sought with the blackout of an hour?

The promoters of Earth Hour assure that climate change is already a proven fact and that because of this the consequences, if something is not done, can be devastating.

The truth is that the fact of turning off the lights for an hour.

It is not about avoiding any climatic consequences, but it does seek to create awareness in people so that their actions are more responsible with the environment.

5 recommendations for an efficient use of energy

#1. Natural Light: To generate more lighting, the rooms of the house can be painted in a light color, such as white. Another way to save energy is to replace the bulbs with savers or LEDs, since they consume up to 90% less than conventional ones.

#2. Turn off and unplug: Before leaving home we must make sure that all the lights are off. In the same way, we unplug every electronic device we have at home.

#3. Iron in less time: Let's opt for a steam iron model, which smoothes clothes faster than a conventional one, likewise, let's start with the garments that have a soft fabric and end with those that need more temperature.

#4. Care of the electric water heater: We must make sure to choose a water heater that is the right size for our family, so we do not heat water unnecessarily consuming more energy. A 50-litre is adequate for a family of four. Let's turn on the hot tub 30 minutes before bathing and immediately turn it off, only in that action we are reducing energy expenditure by up to 80%.

#5. Operation of the refrigerator: Let's check that the seals on the refrigerator door are in good condition and that it does not let the cold escape. Do not introduce hot food, because you will spend more energy to maintain the right temperature.

How can you participate?

Every year WWF invites citizens, town halls, companies and other groups to turn off the light for one hour as a symbol of the fight against climate change. This small gesture, on a global scale, has become a great call to action that has the support of governments and institutions such as the United Nations.

Use #yourpower to change climate change

Millions of people from all over the world will participate in the ninth edition of Earth Hour in 2015 to demonstrate that together we can build a future based on clean energy and in favor of the planet. Your actions and commitments for the environment are the beginning of change. Show that the power is yours: sign up, turn off the light on the next 28.

Your city is part of the solution

“Every year, cities around the world show their support for the campaign by turning off the lights of their main monuments and buildings. In 2014, seven thousand cities from 162 countries joined this global movement. The Puerta de Alcalá, the Alhambra, the Sagrada Familia and the Guggenheim Museum, among others, become a great stage for celebration and homage to the Planet every year.
WWF will also challenge municipalities to join Earth Hour and drive local action to address this global challenge.
